Karur: Protest by contract sanitation workers of Karur corporation demanding revised wages, job security and better working conditions entered its fifth day on Friday.Hundreds of workers, who undertake sanitation and garbage-clearing operations in 48 wards, have been boycotting work and holding a continuous sit-in near the entrance of the corporation office. The agitation began after talks with the district administration failed to resolve their demands. The workers said they were being paid ₹521 a day despite the district administration announcing a revised wage of ₹760. They had raised the issue during a protest last month, when officials assured them of appropriate action. However, they received only ₹521 this month. The workers are also demanding safety equipment, bonus and reduction in workload. They also want the corporation to pay their salaries directly instead of routing them through the contracting agency, besides providing a weekly paid holiday.
