Actress and MP Kangana Ranaut has moved the Delhi High Court seeking legal protection for her personality and publicity rights, alleging that her identity has been misused without authorisation across digital platforms, including through pornographic and obscene content.Justice Vikas Mahajan, who heard the matter as a single-judge Bench, issued summons in Ranaut’s suit and notice on her application seeking an interim injunction.During the hearing, Ranaut’s counsel told the court that the actress was aggrieved by pornographic and obscene material being circulated against her on social media. The court subsequently asked her lawyer to furnish the names of the defendants against whom a takedown order was being sought. The High Court indicated that it could consider passing an appropriate order on the interim injunction application once the required details were placed on record. The court also directed Ranaut’s counsel to submit a revised memo of parties after certain defendants were dropped from the proceedings. The matter has been listed for further hearing on February 3, 2027.Ranaut’s plea comes at a time when the Delhi High Court has been dealing with an increasing number of cases involving the unauthorised use of celebrities’ identities, including AI-generated impersonations, deepfakes, fake endorsements and commercial exploitation of their names and likenesses. In recent months, several prominent personalities, including former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Sunil Gavaskar, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, actors Arjun Kapoor, Allu Arjun, Nagarjuna, Varun Dhawan, Kajol, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Naga Chaitanya, singer Jubin Nautiyal, filmmaker Karan Johar, podcaster Raj Shamani and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, have approached courts seeking protection against the unauthorised use of their identity, likeness or AI-generated versions. The Delhi High Court had also recently granted interim relief to actress Tabu, directing the removal of certain objectionable online content featuring her. The order came while hearing her plea seeking protection of her personality and publicity rights against the unauthorised use of her identity on digital platforms.
