Jamshedpur man dies ‘awaiting stretcher’ at MGMMCH, family alleges negligence

Jamshedpur: A 38-year-old man died allegedly while waiting for a stretcher outside the emergency ward of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur on Saturday, his family alleged. The deceased was identified as Vicky Singh, a resident of Gurudwara Road in Mango.Family members of the deceased claimed that they brought Vicky to the hospital in an auto-rickshaw after complaining of severe chest pain. “We searched frantically for a stretcher for over 25 minutes to shift him from the vehicle to the emergency ward. We requested everyone present, including security guards and ward attendants, for help. But Vicky had stopped responding by the time a stretcher was arranged. Doctors later declared him brought dead,” alleged Deepak Mittal, a friend who had accompanied Vicky to the hospital. The attendants protested alleging serious lapses in emergency response at the largest govt-run hospital in Kolhan.Refuting the allegations of a shortage of stretchers, MGMMCH superintendent Dr Balram Jha said, “There was heavy patient inflow at the time. At present, around 50 stretchers are available for emergency services. Circumstances leading to the alleged delay would be examined for further action.”
