In penury, daily wager gives up custody of 3 kids

Rourkela: In a heart-rending case of poverty, a daily wager from Sundargarh district has surrendered three of his children to the Sundargarh child welfare committee, expressing his inability to raise them. The siblings — two daughters aged 10 and 8, and a son aged 5 — have since been placed in a children’s home in Rourkela for care and upbringing.Confirming the development, CWC chairperson Sami Oram said on Thursday, “The father approached us with his three children, stating he could no longer provide for them due to extreme poverty. We have taken their custody and shifted them to a children’s home in Rourkela. Our immediate effort is to secure their birth certificates and Aadhaar cards so that they can be admitted to school.”The man, a resident of Kinjirkela in Sundargarh, arrived at the CWC office on Tuesday with his children and a few locals. He revealed that his wife had eloped several years ago, leaving him to fend for the children alone. He later remarried and had another child with his second wife.According to Oram, the father had initially intended to surrender all four of his children, but his eldest daughter, aged 12, missed the bus to Sundargarh and could not accompany them. The man also disclosed that neither he nor his children possess Aadhaar cards, preventing them from accessing govt welfare schemes.Moved by his plight, the CWC accepted custody of the three siblings after completing necessary formalities. They were brought to Rourkela the same evening.
