GATE 2027: IIT Madras revises Biotechnology syllabus, expands two-paper options for aspirants
IIT Madras has introduced key revisions to the GATE 2027 information brochure by updating the Biotechnology syllabus and widening the scope of two-paper combinations for select engineering streams. The changes aim to support interdisciplinary learning, while the examination pattern, eligibility norms and schedule remain unchanged. Candidates are encouraged to consult the revised brochure before preparing.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has revised the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 information brochure, introducing changes to the Biotechnology (BT) syllabus and expanding the list of permitted two-paper combinations for select disciplines. The revised brochure has been uploaded on the official GATE 2027 website. The institute has clarified that the latest update is limited to the syllabus and paper combinations. There is no change in the examination schedule, eligibility criteria, or any other admission-related guidelines notified earlier.

More paper combinations for interdisciplinary candidates

One of the key changes announced by IIT Madras relates to the two-paper combinations that candidates can choose while applying for GATE 2027.Students opting for the Robotics and Automation (RA) paper will now have more choices for their second paper. In addition to Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Electrical Engineering (EE), and Mechanical Engineering (ME), candidates can now also combine RA with Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) and Instrumentation Engineering (IN).The list of combinations has also been expanded for other branches. Candidates appearing for Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) can now opt for Robotics and Automation (RA) as their second paper along with the existing choices of CS, DA, EE, IN, and PH. Likewise, Instrumentation Engineering (IN) candidates can now pair their paper with RA in addition to Biomedical Engineering (BM), EC, EE, and ME.The changes are expected to provide greater flexibility to candidates interested in interdisciplinary engineering fields.

Biotechnology syllabus updated

Several other modifications have also been done in the syllabus for biotechnology at IIT Madras in accordance with recent trends in the field. There has been a merging of two old sections into one, namely Fundamentals of Biological Engineering. Sections dealing with material and energy balances, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena have been consolidated in order to create a more organized syllabus.A subject called “Engineering Mathematics” now includes topics like Bayesian statistics and vector calculus. There has been an increased stress on metabolism, immunology, and microbiology in the section of General Biology.Other topics included in the modified syllabus for biotechnology include newer topics from the field of recombinant DNA technology, such as recombination-based cloning, biosensors, and omics.

Exam pattern remains the same

Although there have been some changes in the syllabus, IIT Madras has clarified that the examination format has not changed at all. There are going to be 30 test papers in GATE 2027 in English, each worth 100 marks. There are no changes in the examination date either.

What candidates should do

With the revised syllabus now in place, candidates planning to appear for GATE 2027 should carefully go through the updated information brochure before starting their preparation. Aspirants, particularly those from the Biotechnology stream and those planning to opt for two papers, are advised to check the revised syllabus and paper combinations to ensure their preparation strategy aligns with the latest guidelines.
