Jaipur: A state health department investigation into maternal deaths at govt hospitals in Kota, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Bhilwara has found four drugs to be of substandard quality, but officials Thursday said none was linked to the deaths.A senior health department official said more than 200 drug samples were collected during the investigations, of which four failed quality standards. Two were from Kota and one each from Bikaner and Jodhpur. However, inquiry committees found no evidence linking these medicines to the maternal deaths. The probes relate to at least 18 women who died at govt hospitals in Kota, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Bhilwara and Banswara in May and June. The state govt had ordered separate inquiries and sent expert teams to examine the circumstances and recommend corrective measures. However, reports of earlier inquiries in Kota, Bikaner and Jodhpur have not been made public, and no accountability has been fixed so far.The department has also cleared doctors in Kota who were suspended following the deaths in May, with officials saying no medical negligence was established. In the Kota and Bikaner cases, the govt attributed the deaths to multiple factors, including patients’ comorbidities, ruling out negligence, substandard or spurious medicines and healthcare-associated infections. The findings have failed to convince grieving families.
