Jaipur: Police in Kotputli-Behror detained five people Tuesday in connection with violence that broke out during protests against alleged illegal mining in Ajeetpura village Monday, while investigations continue into villagers’ claims that firing took place during the clash. Additional SP Nazim Ali said cross-cases had been registered by both sides and the matter was under investigation. Police have not yet confirmed allegations that protesters came under gunfire. “The investigation into the allegations of firing is still under way,” Ali said. According to police, the unrest was linked to a long-running dispute over mining activities in the area. Officials said a permanent resolution would require discussions among villagers, the district administration, the mining lease holder and the mining department. Authorities said the district collector was also working towards resolving the issue and that meetings involving all stakeholders were expected soon. Police officials said they had personally met an injured man at the hospital to verify claims that he had sustained a gunshot wound. The nature of the injury is being examined through medical and forensic assessment. Officials said the medical report would help determine whether the injury was caused by a firearm projectile or resulted from a fall onto a sharp object. They added that all available evidence was being scrutinised before any conclusions were drawn. Tension continues to prevail in the village, though police and administrative officials are closely monitoring the situation. Additional police personnel have been deployed as a precautionary measure, and authorities said further action would be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
