FIR against Muslim man for marriage by fraud, conversion bid

Kanpur: An FIR has been registered against a 34-year-old Muslim man for allegedly sexually exploiting a 29-year-old woman, marrying her by concealing his identity and marital status, and pressuring her to convert, police said on Thursday.The woman, a resident of Bajaria, told police that she met the accused in 2015 while studying at Kanpur Vidya Mandir. He allegedly introduced himself as Ankit Verma, sexually exploited her, and later took her to Prayagraj, where they got married.She alleged that after reaching her in-laws’ home, she discovered that his real name was Mohammad Shoaib and that he was already married and had a 1.5-year-old daughter. Shoaib subsequently pressured her to convert and assaulted her, she alleged.The woman said she moved to Shuklaganj in 2021. While working as a security guard at a hospital, Shoaib allegedly created disturbances when she refused to give him money for alcohol, causing her to lose her job.Collectorganj station house officer Sanjeev Kumar Singh said an FIR was registered on Wednesday evening under provisions related to religious conversion and the SC/ST Act.
