Mumbai: The family of Mayank Lohar, who was stabbed to death by a co-passenger over a trivial dispute late on Tuesday, questioned how a knife was taken on a local train undetected and why no one intervened.“Even local train journeys are not safe anymore,” said a relative, who was at the hospital with Lohar’s father, Ramesh, and his brother, Mohit, to claim the body. “Had co-travellers got together and overpowered the accused (Roshan Suvarna), he could have been apprehended on the spot. Instead, they made videos on their phones,” a cousin said.Lohar lived with his parents in Virar and had been commuting to his workplace—a retail clothing outlet store in Andheri—by train for the past year. “My son would keep to himself on the commute… He had never met the accused before,” said Ramesh, who works as a driver. “A young life has been snuffed out for no fault of his… The perpetrator must be given the strictest punishment possible. The authorities must ensure that no other lives are lost like this.”Mayank has two brothers and a sister. The eldest brother works in Ahmedabad and younger brother Mohit is a student.Mohit said the family was waiting for Lohar’s return from work when police’s call came. “They said he was injured… Maybe they thought it would be tough to break the news of his death over the phone. Our mother is inconsolable,” he said.Police said a co-passenger tried to revive Lohar but he had bled profusely. Blood was splattered all over the floor of the train compartment. Two witnesses from the compartment came forward. Their statements have been recorded.Lohar’s postmortem examination was conducted on Wednesday. His family said they will perform the funeral on Friday in Virar after his elder brother and his grandfather arrive.
