Coloured gemstones in necklaces, statement earrings, bangles, rings and brooches instantly elevate an ensemble. But what if you could wear those colours in your outfits this Diwali? From emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue to amethyst purple and violet, jewel-toned outfits are the perfect addition to your festive wardrobe. Not only do they guarantee drama, but they also lend a luxurious and glamorous vibe to your overall look.
A natural choice for festivities
Jewellery colours, be it gold, silver or even colours of precious gemstones, are defined as rich, royal, vibrant and celebratory. Bennu Sehgall, fashion designer, says, “Jewel tones have a depth and intensity that instantly elevate festive dressing. These colours work well because they enhance the richness of a fabric and bring definition to a silhouette.”Parikshaat Wadhwani, a celebrity fashion stylist, explains, “As jewel colours draw inspiration from precious stones, they naturally evoke luxury, depth and timeless elegance. Emerald feels regal, ruby is passionate and powerful, sapphire is sophisticated, while amethyst adds a certain mystery.”Additionally, the appetite for colours has grown in the recent past. “For a while, softer palettes dominated occasionwear; however, now there is a renewed interest in richer, more saturated colours, particularly for evening celebrations. People are also increasingly becoming comfortable wearing deeper shades in contemporary silhouettes, especially during the festive season,” says Mrunal Khimji, founder and creative director, luxury fashion label.
Colour sets the mood, fabric gives it a personality
Every fabric works differently with different jewel tones. A fabric like velvet gives emerald, ruby and sapphire a royal depth, while silk and satin bring out their luminosity and make the colours look fluid and luxurious. Tulle, net, lace and organza work beautifully with jewel tones as they balance the intensity of these colours with a sense of lightness. A deep emerald green or ruby red in sheer layers creates depth, while lace adds texture and intricate detailing to the outfit. Organza allows deeper colours to feel lighter and more delicate. Crepe gives them a softer, more fluid quality.Surface texture makes a difference too; for example, a matte finish can feel understated whereas a gentle sheen adds dimension. Hence, Wadhwani suggests thinking about the mood you want to create before choosing the fabric.
Let the occasion guide the silhouette
According to Sehgall, for a puja or intimate festive gatherings, jewel tones work beautifully in elegant, well-cut outfits with delicate embroidery or subtle embellishments. For cocktail parties, there is more room to experiment with structured gowns, sheer panels, sequins and dramatic cuts in shades like sapphire blue or emerald green.Wadhwani suggests opting for a jewel-toned kurta set, a silk saree or a simple anarkali paired with delicate jewellery, for an intimate gathering or puja. On the contrary, the stylist says, “For Diwali and evening parties, a sapphire-blue gown, an emerald co-ord or a ruby-red saree with a contemporary blouse can feel striking without being overly traditional.”Further, combining two different jewel tones in one outfit also makes some of the most interesting combinations. The trick is to establish a clear visual hierarchy. Khimji notes, “Emerald green and ruby red create a classic festive contrast while sapphire blue with emerald feels more subtle and contemporary. Amethyst paired with deep blue can be especially elegant. Carefully decide how the colours will work within the garment. One could use a dominant shade for the main silhouette and introduce the other through a dupatta, border or blouse.”Pairing several equally saturated colours in similar proportions can, however, sometimes make an outfit look visually busy. Hence, Wadhwani enforces the importance of styling the look with intention. “Colour clashing is only a problem when it looks accidental; when it is intentional, it becomes personal style.”
Pair the shades with the right jewellery
When wearing jewel-toned dresses, special attention should be paid to the jewellery pairings. “Gold and jewel tones are a natural pairing, particularly with emerald, ruby and amethyst, because the warmth of gold enhances their richness. Silver and white gold create a cooler, sharper contrast and work beautifully with sapphire blue, while diamonds are wonderfully versatile when you want some sparkle without introducing another dominant colour.”Coloured gemstones are also worth considering, says Khimji, when you want to introduce another layer of colour, particularly through a carefully chosen accent. “The garment should guide the decision. If the embroidery is elaborate, understated jewellery can create a more balanced look whereas a simpler outfit gives you more freedom to experiment with statement jewellery pieces.”
There is a growing interest in deeper, richer colours for festive dressing. Jewel tones bring depth to an outfit and make a silhouette look more defined. They also work beautifully with luxurious fabrics, intricate embroidery, and interesting surface detailing
