Drunk car driver booked for hurting 2 senior citizens in Kamothe

Navi Mumbai: A 27-year-old man, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, drove a car that hit two senior citizens strolling near a pond in Kamothe, causing injuries, police said. The incident occurred on Thursday around 7.15 pm.The injured were identified as Shanti Shashikant Ahire, 60, and Anjeya Muttya Karnati, 71. Ahire was hospitalised with severe injuries, including fractures to her left leg and right hand, and an abrasion injury on her face. Karnati sustained minor injuries to his waist, legs and face.The accused driver was identified as Santosh Kumar Baitha, a resident of Sector 10, Kamothe.Jyoti Deshmukh, senior inspector of Kamothe, said, “The pedestrian, Shanti Ahire, accompanied by her son and his daughter, was strolling near the pond in Sector 10, Kamothe, when the accused, in a drunken state, driving his car recklessly, hit Ahire and another pedestrian, Anjeya Karnati. Both pedestrians sustained multiple injuries. However, the car driver Santosh Kumar Baitha did not escape from the spot and was detained by the police. His medical test report at Panvel sub-district hospital was positive for alcohol consumption.SPI Deshmukh said, “Acting on a complaint by Ahire’s another son Mangesh Ahire (34), a resident of sector 50, Kamothe, an FIR was registered against the accused Baitha, who was booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for rash or negligent driving on a public way in a manner that endangers human life and causing injury to others along with Motor Vehicle Act sections for driving dangerously and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was served with a notice under the provisions of Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita.
