Door-to door visits in Delhi Cantt, NDMC areas to begin today

New Delhi: From April 16, govt enumerators will begin door-to-door visits in New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment areas for ‘house-listing operations’ as part of Census 2027.During this exercise, they will verify entries made by residents during the self-enumeration process, which was open from April 1 to 15, and freeze the entries after corrections, if any. Households that have not opted for self-enumeration will be covered during this physical door-to-door visit that will continue until May 15.The enumerators will ask 33 questions covering parameters, such as building and house numbers, structural aspects like floor, wall and roof materials, and household-level data, including the number of residents and the socio-economic category of each household. The visits begin a day after the fortnight-long self-enumeration exercise concluded. Nearly 5,000 residents, including the President, Prime Minister, Union home minister and other dignitaries, have completed their self-enumeration through the CMMS app or the official portal.“The self-enumeration will ease the burden on the enumerators when they undertake the door-to-door visits as they will already have access to pre-filled and verified data. This will reduce the time spent on collecting basic information and allow them to focus on verification and fill in any missing details quickly. It will also minimise errors, avoid duplication and make the process more efficient. As a result, the door-to-door visits will be quicker and smoother while ensuring more accurate and reliable data collection,” said an official. The self-enumeration exercise was first launched in NDMC and Delhi Cantonment as these areas are relatively sparsely populated and many of their residents, including MPs, senior govt officers and other functionaries, live in govt facilities — making them ideal for a pilot rollout. Their higher literacy levels and better digital access also supported the online enumeration process, allowing authorities to test the system before expanding it across Delhi.Over 569 enumerators will be deployed for the on-ground house-listing exercise, the official said. The areas have been divided into 560 house-listing blocks, each comprising on an average of around 180 houses.During the visits from April 16 to May 15, the enumerators will carry out physical verification, allowing corrections where needed before freezing the data. Households that have completed self-enumeration will be required to share their self-enumeration ID (SE ID) for verification. “Households that have not opted for self-enumeration will be covered during the physical visits,” the official said. The enumerators will use a dedicated mobile application to collect data digitally, ensuring higher accuracy and faster processing. The residents have been urged to cooperate with them and participate in the Census exercise, the officials said, noting that it is being conducted after nearly one-and-a-half decades.Around 12 lakh households across seven states and Union territories — Andaman and Nicobar, Goa, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha and Sikkim — along with parts of Delhi, including NDMC and Delhi Cantonment Board areas, have successfully completed self-enumeration during the 15-day window ahead of Census 2027’s Phase I.
