Some films change shape completely between their first idea and their final release. Arun Matheswaran’s ‘DC’ is one such project, the gangster drama went through major changes during its decade-long development. The film eventually cast Lokesh Kanagaraj in the lead role, with Wamiqa Gabbi playing Chandra. But the project was originally planned in a very different setting, with another actor in mind for the central character.
Was Siddharth cast in ‘DC’ before Lokesh Kanagaraj?
Cinematographer Mukesh G has revealed that actor Siddharth was almost confirmed as the lead of ‘DC’ when Arun Matheswaran first developed the film around a decade ago.Speaking to The Variety India about the early version of the project, Mukesh said, “‘DC’ was completely different 10 years ago. There were so many heroes who wanted to do it. At that point of time Siddharth was almost the final choice for us to mount the film. He was almost supposed to do the film.”According to Mukesh, the story at that stage still centered on a gangster but was set in a more urban world.
Why did Siddharth not do ‘DC’?
Mukesh explained that the long delay in bringing DC to the screen eventually changed the film’s course. Several actors knew about the script in its early stage, but the project took years to materialise. “See, 10 years before, Siddharth was supposed to play the role. After that when things took long to materialise, everyone went on to do something else and completely lost track of everything,” Mukesh said.By the time the project returned to production, the story had evolved considerably. The earlier city-based version was replaced by a different world, and the characters and overall creative approach changed with it.

The eventual version of ‘DC’ came together with Lokesh Kanagaraj in the lead role and Wamiqa Gabbi as Chandra. Arun Matheswaran directed the film, with Mukesh G handling the cinematography. The long development period also reshaped the film’s female lead and its emotional core, the earlier character Parvati eventually gave way to Chandra.‘DC’ earned over Rs 100 crore worldwide and the makers officially announced the box office achievement celebrating the film’s success.
