India missed opening their account in the points tally as Ashok Kumar Malik finished out of the podium in the men’s lightweight para powerlifting event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday.Haryana’s Malik, who weighs 66.4 kg, had two successful lifts of 195 and 200 to garner 143.8 points. However, he fell 9.7 points short of the bronze medallist and last edition’s champion, Bonnie Gustin’s (Malaysia) 153.5 in the final. The gold went to hosts England’s Mark Swain, who lifted 212 and 222 kgs to score 153.9 points, tied with Nigeria’s Roland Ezuruike. However, Swain won gold on the countback.At the CWG para powerlifting uses a multi-category scoring format, where points are given by applying a mathematical formula — Halasz Formula — considering the lifter’s body weight and the weight they lift. Another Indian, Paramjeet Kumar finished last (seventh) after lifting 176 kgs and getting 135.6 points.Second win for lawn bowls women’s pairOn the second day of the lawn bowls competition, Rupa Rani Tirkey combined with her 2022 partner Pinky Singh in the women’s pairs event to beat South Africa 2-0 for their second consecutive victory.Rupa (lead) and Pinky (skip) were part of the historic gold-winning fours team that triumphed at the 2022 CWG edition in Birmingham.On Friday, the Indian pair registered a 6-4, 7-5 win over Thabelo Muvhango (lead) and Janse van Rensburg (skip) in section B at the Scottish Event Campus. The pair had defeated Malta 7-1 in their opening match on Thursday.Meanwhile, in swimming, Tokyo and Paris Games participant Srihari Nataraj qualified for the men’s 50m backstroke semifinals after finishing joint overall 14th and fifth in his heats. The Karnataka swimmer clocked 25.52 seconds, tied with Bermuda’s Jack Harvey to make the 16-swimmer semifinal list.
