Trichy: Trichy corporation has submitted a proposal to the state govt for a multi-level car parking (MLCP) at Srirangam, primarily to cater to the needs of devotees visiting the Ranganathaswamy temple. The project, estimated to cost Rs 40 crore, is likely to be implemented under the public-private partnership (PPP) model on corporation land near the rajagopuram.Sources said HR&CE minister S Ramesh inspected the site and expressed interest in developing an MLCP for the Srirangam temple, which lacks a dedicated parking space. The site is located 250ft away from the temple complex, abutting the police station.Corporation officials surveyed the site, measuring around 10,000sqft, recently.

Though the site is not perfect for an MLCP, the local body submitted a report to the state govt to obtain required approvals. “The land falls within a height restriction zone as it is near the rajagopuram. As building height should be restricted at nine metres, designing the driveway with setback areas is challenging,” an official said.The state govt is likely to take a call on the project in a week. The corporation has planned a two-floor facility with a basement. The ground floor, first floor, and second floor can accommodate 25 cars each, while the basement is reserved for parking 120 two-wheelers.While land parcels are available near Amma Mandapam on Cauvery riverbank and Yatri Nivas on Kollidam riverbank for parking space, officials said battery cars had to be operated to shuttle devotees between the temple and the parking lot.
