Patiala: Balwant Singh Rajoana has demanded an immediate decision on his sentence and would not seek clemency, said Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj and SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami after meeting the death-row convict in the 1995 assassination case of former Punjab CM Beant Singh for an hour at Patiala Central Jail on Tuesday.Giani Gargaj said Rajoana wanted authorities either to execute him or commute his sentence instead of keeping the matter pending. He said Sikhs have traditionally embraced martyrdom rather than bowing down or accepting life as a concession.A former Punjab Police constable, Rajoana was sentenced to death in Aug 2007 for his role in the Aug 31, 1995, suicide bombing outside Punjab civil secretariat. His execution, scheduled for March 31, 2012, was stayed by Union home ministry after SGPC petitioned President under Article 72.Giani Gargaj said Centre had announced in 2019, during Guru Nanak Dev’s 550th Prakash Gurpurb, that Rajoana’s death sentence would be commuted, but the decision remained unimplemented.He described Rajoana’s continued solitary detention as a human rights violation, saying he had been imprisoned for nearly 32 years, including almost 15 years in condemned cells. He also alleged double standards in granting parole, contrasting repeated paroles given to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim with the denial of temporary parole to Beant Singh assassination convict Jagtar Singh Hawara to visit his critically ill, comatose mother.Dhami said the delegation, which included Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar Baba Tek Singh Dhanaula, found Rajoana in high spirits. Rajoana was scheduled to be taken under tight security to PGIMER, Chandigarh, later in the day for specialised eye examination and treatment.
