Cocomi endorses UNC economic blockade

Imphal: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (Cocomi) on Monday announced full support for the United Naga Council’s (UNC) ongoing inter-district economic blockade, citing continued violence in Manipur and a fresh arson attack in Imphal West.COCOMI’s announcement came two days after at least five houses were set ablaze at Kanto Sabal in Imphal West. In its statement, COCOMI said six Meitei houses were set on fire in the incident, condemned the arson and termed it another act of violence by “narco terrorists”.The UNC began the inter-district economic blockade on May 17 after six Naga civilians abducted from Leilon Vaiphei, a Kuki village in Kangpokpi district, remained untraceable. The blockade was intensified after the mutilated and dismembered bodies of the six were found on June 10.COCOMI said the demand for justice in the abduction and killing of the six Naga civilians remains unresolved and contended that the state’s prolonged violence continues without lasting resolution more than three years after the outbreak of the conflict on May 3, 2023. It said it would fully support the UNC blockade from Monday to counter repeated violence against civilians.Earlier, the Kuki Inpi Manipur said residents of Kangpokpi district and Kuki settlements in parts of Tamenglong, Ukhrul and Kamjong districts are facing severe hardship due to prolonged disruption of access, movement, transportation and supply of essential commodities.
