Bypolls for wards 58 & 60 deferred in Indore over voter list discrepancies

Indore: The State Election Commission has deferred the municipal byelections for Ward 58 and Ward 60 in Indore due to alleged discrepancies in the current electoral rolls.Following a complaint regarding alleged electoral list inaccuracies, the commission asked the district administration for a detailed verification of the voters list. The decision was also made after administrative and police evaluations indicated that the bypolls was not possible due to ongoing festivities, while the month-long programme for the byelection was already released. The commission also sought a detailed report from the police. The submitted report raised concerns regarding law and order if voting proceeded under the scheduled timeline. In response, the commission halted the bypoll process to conduct physical verifications and a thorough audit of the voter rolls across both wards. As decided, officials will conduct door-to-door physical verification in Wards 58 and 60 to validate registered voter details. A retired IAS officer will be appointed as an official observer to oversee the reverification process and ensure transparency. The commission will announce a revised polling schedule only after the voter lists are corrected and finalised. The bypolls proceeding for Ward 60 was already stayed pursuant to a high court order. With the suspension of Ward 58’s schedule, the election process across both vacant municipal seats remains suspended until further notice.
