Pithoraragh: The Kailash Mansarovar Road from Dharchula to Lipulekh was blocked at two places after a heavy boulder damaged a bailey bridge at Kulagad, 9 km from Dharchula, on Tuesday night, while a landslide occurred at Malgad, 22 km from Dharchula.“The roadblock brought vehicular movement to a halt, leaving 47 members of the ninth batch of the MEA-organised Kailash Mansarovar yatra stranded at Gunji on their return after completing the pilgrimage in China. The group had crossed into India through the Lipulekh Pass on Wednesday and, as per schedule, was to stay at Bundi,” said D S Bisht, manager of the KMVN guest house in Dharchula.The Border Roads Organisation inspected the damaged bridge and decided to construct a temporary alternative road at Kulagad to restore vehicular movement. The road is likely to be completed in a day, while construction of a new bridge will begin after two or three days, officials said.“All vehicular movement was stopped from Wednesday morning,” said Bhupendra Singh Mahar, district disaster management officer, Pithoragarh. Of the 20 roads, including three border roads, blocked in the district on Wednesday morning, eight had been reopened by evening, he said. The debris at Malgad has also been cleared and the road is now open.Ashish Joshi, SDM Dharchula, said, “The temporary road at Kulagad is expected to be ready within a day. Construction of the bridge will begin after two or three days.”
