Assam turns Fifa fever into carnival with fan parks

Guwahati: Assam is tapping into the Fifa World Cup fever with a CM FIFA Fan Park in Guwahati and Dibrugarh, positioning the initiative as a boost to sports tourism in the state. The Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) is setting up the outdoor fan zones.Officials said the fan parks will be hosted at Latasil Playground in Guwahati and Chowkidingee Field in Dibrugarh. The Guwahati venue opened on Monday, while Dibrugarh starts on Tuesday. “The venue in Guwahati will screen World Cup matches daily, and the Latasil ground will have an accommodation capacity of approximately 3000-4000 people,” said Padmapani Bora, managing director of ATDC.He said the twin-venue plan is designed to recreate the tournament’s energy in a carnival-like setting. “We want to bring the fans together, allowing them to enjoy the matches on giant LED screens in a festive atmosphere. The venue has been equipped with sound systems, food stalls and other amenities to ensure comfort for visitors throughout the tournament. Since this is the CM’s initiative, there will be no entry fees for visitors,” Bora said. The programme will also feature performances by local bands and artists on a dedicated stage. “Assam is becoming part of the global sports tourism landscape. Sports tourism is a relatively new concept and can involve any sport that attracts people from different parts of the world, either as participants or spectators. Therefore, it is our responsibility to promote and develop it,” Bora added.ATDC officials said police have been informed and will manage traffic and safety during the screenings.Residents welcomed the move but flagged safety concerns, particularly for late-night matches. “Watching World Cup matches with hundreds of other fans is a completely different experience. Instead of watching the match at home, I would rather cheer alongside fellow supporters. However, staying out late to watch the matches raises safety concerns in the city. I hope the authorities take adequate measures to ensure a safe and secure experience for everyone,” said Ankita Konwar, a Guwahati resident.Another resident, Ritvik Kashyap, said the mood in the state is celebratory after Assam hosted a live display of the World Cup trophy earlier this year.
