Mumbai: Western Railway on Friday demolished the remaining 94 structures at Garib Nagar in Bandra East, after rehabilitation of all eligible project-affected persons (PAPs) by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).The cleared land will be used for expanding railway infrastructure around Bandra Terminus, including the construction of an additional platform and facilities to accommodate and maintain more trains. These structures had been spared during Western Railway’s demolition drive in May 2026 to allow eligible occupants to be rehabilitated. MMRDA has since allotted permanent alternative accommodation to all 94 eligible PAPs and handed over possession of the homes. The demolition follows an October 23, 2026, order of the Bombay High Court in Writ Petition (Lodging) No. 8840 of 2026. While disposing of the petition, the court directed the eligible PAPs to vacate the premises within a week and asked the railway authorities to demolish the structures within 48 hours thereafter. The cleared land is required for several infrastructure works planned by Western Railway in the Bandra area. These include an integrated railway complex on the eastern side of Bandra Terminus, with better passenger access and amenities.A major component of the plan is the construction of an additional platform (PF 8), along with an expansion of stabling facilities. This will allow Western Railway to accommodate more trains at the station. The railway also plans to expand its train maintenance infrastructure and relocate or develop ancillary maintenance facilities. The plan includes improvements to passenger circulation, holding areas and other supporting facilities to manage passenger movement, particularly during peak hours and the departure and arrival of long-distance trains. The proposed works are part of Western Railway’s plan to develop the Bandra area as an integrated railway complex. The availability of the cleared land is expected to help the railway take up these projects, which are aimed at increasing train-handling capacity and improving passenger facilities at one of Mumbai’s important long-distance railway terminals.
