Airtel hikes postpaid tariffs, others may follow

NEW DELHI: Be prepared to shell out higher mobile tariffs. Bharti Airtel will from Thursday hike postpaid tariffs by 3- 10%. India’s second-largest telecom operator has included free international roaming (for one trip per SIM) worth Rs 2,000 in all postpaid plans, which will go up by Rs 50. The new postpaid plan rental plans will now start at Rs 499. Other operators may follow suit.In past few months, telecom service providers have been encouraging users to move to higher-value plans to improve their average revenue per user (ARPU) by adding new services and discontinuing their lower charge plans. Earlier this year, Vodafone Idea had also hiked prices for some of its postpaid family packs by 7-9%.According to Centrum Institutional Research, the pricing environment in the telecom industry has become more favourable and a tariff hike of 12-15% over the next four-to-five months could be on the cards.
