Ahmedabad: An NRI couple filed a police complaint after jewellery worth Rs 21 lakh went missing from their home in Akhbarnagar. According to the FIR lodged with Ghatlodia police, the couple frequently travel to the US, where they run a motel business, and usually keep their valuables in a bank locker during such trips.Police said the couple had taken the jewellery out of the locker in Sep last year after returning from the US. The items, including gold mangalsutras, diamond earrings, rings and chains, were kept in a cupboard on the upper floor of their house. The complainant told police the valuables were last seen on Dec 28, 2025.The theft came to light on April 15 this year, while the family was packing in the early hours for an April 16 flight back to the US. On finding the jewellery missing from the cupboard, they searched the entire house, but to no avail.As their tickets had already been confirmed, the couple left for the US without lodging an immediate police complaint. They returned to Ahmedabad on May 17 and, after another search at the residence, approached police on May 19.The stolen valuables include a rose-gold jewellery set, two mangalsutras, diamond-studded ornaments and several gold items weighing 21 tolas. Police said the complainant suspected their domestic help. Ghatlodia police registered a case of burglary against an unidentified person and launched an investigation.
