PATNA: Several parts of Bihar faced the threat of a deluge on Friday as water levels in several rivers, including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi and Burhi Gandak, continued to rise following heavy rainfall in catchment areas in Nepal.The situation comes after severe flash floods hit neighbouring Nepal following an ice-rock landslide that blocked a river near the country’s border with China. The floods have affected several districts and left at least 826 people missing, according to Nepal’s disaster management authorities.With the possibility of increased water flow downstream, the Bihar and Uttar Pradesh administrations have stepped up monitoring of rivers originating in or flowing through the Himalayan region.“The water levels of several rivers, including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi and Burhi Gandak, have been rising following continuous rainfall in their catchment areas in Nepal. The rivers have touched or crossed the danger level at several places in the bordering districts,” a senior official of the Water Resources Department said.The department’s bulletin issued on Friday said the Gandak, Kosi, Ganga, Burhi Gandak and Ghaghra were flowing above the danger mark at several locations in Bihar, while some other places had reached warning levels.The Gandak has crossed the danger mark in Gopalganj. The Kosi and Burhi Gandak have also reached danger levels in parts of Khagaria, Katihar and Kursela.The Ganga was above the danger mark at Digha, Hathidah and Gandhighat in Patna, as well as at Kahlgaon in Bhagalpur, the bulletin said.The Ghaghra was also flowing above the danger mark at Darauli in Siwan district.Authorities are continuing to monitor the river levels closely as the situation in Nepal could lead to further rises in downstream areas of Bihar.
