KANPUR: A 16-year-old girl died after falling into a nearly 20-foot-deep defunct borewell at her home in UP’s Kanpur on Friday morning while she was preparing to tie a rakhi on her brother’s wrist.The girl, identified as Chutki Sharma, was standing in the courtyard when the soil covering the defunct borewell suddenly collapsed. She fell into the pit at around 6.40am as she reached out to tie the rakhi.The incident occurred at around 6.40am in Purwamir village under the Maharajpur police station area, about 35 km from Kanpur district headquarters.Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal said that Chutki had fallen around 20 feet into the borewell, following which a large-scale rescue operation was launched.Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and fire department were deployed at the site, with around 60 personnel taking part in the rescue operation.Rescuers used excavators to dig a parallel pit in an attempt to reach the girl. The operation was carried out carefully as the ground around the borewell and the house was reportedly unstable, raising concerns about a further collapse.Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma said the condition of the building was being monitored during the rescue operation.After several hours of efforts, rescuers pulled the girl out of the borewell and took her to Sarsaul Primary Health Centre, where doctors declared her brought dead, officials said.Accroding to family said that the borewell had been dug in the courtyard around three years ago but was abandoned when the work could not be completed. A second borewell was later dug at another location.The family suspects that the abandoned borewell had weakened the soil, which eventually collapsed after recent rainfall.Police, local rescue teams and NDRF personnel were involved in the rescue operation.
