Chennai: DMK and CPM flayed the TVK govt on Wednesday for cracking down on SFI and DYFI members who held protests against Neet. DMK accused TVK of adopting double standards as chief minister C Joseph Vijay expressed solidarity with the protests in New Delhi even as the police arrested the protestors here. CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said TN police’s action was no different from that of Delhi police. State minister Rajmohan defended the arrests saying the govt will not entertain `instigated’ protests.“Arresting those protesting in Tamil Nadu in support of the students’ agitation in Delhi exposes the ruling party’s double standards on NEET,” said leader of opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin. Udhayanidhi alleged that the TVK govt was treating protests against the BJP-led Union government as if they were directed against itself and using police action to curb dissent. He demanded the immediate release of the protestors and called on the govt to withdraw its “repressive measures” against anti-NEET protesters.DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, who participated in the protest at Delhi, questioned whether the TVK govt was scared of the protesters. “Did the TVK govt arrest these youngsters because it feared that protests in Tamil Nadu supporting the students’ agitation in Delhi would upset the BJP-led Union govt?’’ Kanimozhi askedCPM state secretary P Shanmugam also condemned the arrests, saying the police denied permission for the solidarity protest in Chennai and forcibly detained SFI and DYFI cadres before releasing them later in the night. He said the state govt should not suppress democratic protests and asserted that the anti-NEET movement would continue.Meanwhile, Rajmohan defended the arrests, saying that NEET protests will be allowed only if they are conducted in a democratic, peaceful manner with police approval.Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Rajmohan said the TVK govt was all for peaceful protests by students. “Protests should be held in a manner that doesn’t cause hindrance to the public or traffic flow. Roads are not meant for protests. Those protests that erupt all of a sudden on instigations will not be entertained,” the minister said.
