Trichy: A couple were killed after a tipper truck rammed their motorcycle from behind near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district in the early hours of Sunday. Two boys travelling on another motorcycle ahead of them were also injured in the accident.The deceased were identified as D Pandiyan, 35, a welder, and his wife Anusiya, 29, of Koranaadu Karuppur near Kumbakonam.Police said the couple were returning home around 1 am after attending a function. Two boys, who are their relatives, were riding another motorcycle ahead of them on the bypass road near Koranaadu Karuppur when the tipper truck allegedly hit the couple’s vehicle from behind.Pandiyan and Anusiya were thrown off the motorcycle and died on the spot due to severe injuries.The two boys also sustained injuries and were admitted to the Kumbakonam Government Hospital for treatment.Kumbakonam Taluk police recovered the bodies and sent them for postmortem. The truck driver allegedly fled the scene after the accident.Based on a complaint, police registered a case against the driver under Sections 281, 125(a) and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash and negligent driving, endangering life, and causing death by negligence. Further investigation is underway.
