Trichy: Two days into the onset of the northeast monsoon, several Trichy city roads, including in low-lying areas, remained inundated on Friday following a few hours of moderate rainfall on Thursday night. The spell began around 9.30pm on Thursday. Almost all parts of the city, including Cantonment, Thillai Nagar, Thennur and Palakkarai, received substantial rainfall, besides areas on the outskirts such as Samayapuram and Thuvakudi. Golden Rock recorded 3.6cm; Trichy town, 2.5cm; Trichy Junction railway station and Trichy airport registered 2.3cm and 1.2cm of rainfall respectively as of Friday morning.Thillai Nagar Main Road, Pattabiraman Street, Melapudur Main Road, McDonalds Road, Major Saravanan Road, Salai Road and Karur Bypass Road were most affected during the maiden monsoon spell. Though Salai Road and Pattabiraman Street areas have drains on both sides of the carriageway, waterlogging on the roads made commuting tough for two-wheeler riders.“Due to power cuts near Thillai Nagar, we could not see the carriageway properly. There was a sense of panic among commuters as rainwater completely submerged the road,” said K Priyanka, a BPO worker returning home via Salai Road.Corporation officials blamed solid waste and plastic bottles for clogging drains. “Soon after sanitation workers removed waste accumulated on stormwater drains, inundations on roads receded in a few minutes. We had desilted most of the drains just before the rain,” an official said.
