IIIT student found dead in hostel; boarders allege lack of medical support
Students demanded the resignation of institute’s director and improvements in hostel facilities

Ranchi: A first-year student of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Ranchi, allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room on the Khelgaon premises on Saturday night, triggering protests by students over facilities and medical support.Aditya Kumar (20), a resident of Bihar’s Purnia district, was found dead in his room, DSP Sanjeev Besra said. “Police have not found any suicide note nor received any complaint requiring action. His parents have been informed,” he said. The protest began around midnight and continued through Sunday, with students demanding the resignation of institute director Rajiv Srivastava and improvements in hostel facilities, particularly the mess and medical services.Students alleged that a lift at the hostel was not functioning and that the ambulance stationed there did not have oxygen support. They claimed Aditya had to be brought down from his room and taken to a local hospital without oxygen support, and that he had died before reaching the facility. The students briefly blocked the Khelgaon-Tatisilwai road on Sunday, but later withdrew the blockade voluntarily.Srivastava reached the campus around noon to hear the students’ grievances. The protesters, however, demanded that he resign, saying they had earlier approached him about the lack of basic amenities. They raised slogans against him and stopped his car when he tried to leave.“Aditya had come to the hostel two months ago. I have assured the students that an inquiry will be conducted and action taken against anyone found guilty. We will also take measures to prevent a recurrence,” Srivastava told reporters. He said the students’ anger was justified.Police said around 4.30 pm that the students had returned to their hostels. Aditya’s body was sent to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) for post-mortem examination. If you or someone you know is in distress, contact Tele-MANAS at 14416 or a mental health professional.
