MCC commissioner holds surprise inspections in City
MCC commissioner Rahul Ratnam Pandey at the Urwa Market in Mangaluru on Wednesday

Mangaluru: To inspect urban development initiatives and address public grievances in various parts of the city, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) commissioner Rahul Ratnam Pandey conducted field visits to several locations on Wednesday.Visiting the Urwa Market area, the commissioner discussed possibilities for systematically segregating flower, vegetable, meat and other stalls. He directed officials to call for a comprehensive tender rather than managing the market process in parts. Local vendors highlighted that footfall has been declining due to inadequate basic infrastructure.Responding to this, the commissioner instructed the town vending committee to conduct a survey of the market area and assured vendors that a separate meeting will be convened next week to address their concerns.Additionally, the commissioner offered two options for officials to evaluate, relocating all street vendors into the market complex—similar to the Central Market Complex model—or reassessing the project scope. While reviewing the parking facilities at the Urwa Market Complex, vendors and security personnel reported frequent disturbances caused by drunkards and miscreants at night. The commissioner directed security staff to submit a formal written complaint to MCC officials and assured that the issue would be taken up directly with the Mangaluru City Police commissioner and the deputy commissioner of police (DCP).During his visit to the Kudmul Ranga Rao Memorial in Babugudda, the commissioner discussed beautifying the site to promote tourism. He instructed officials to prepare a cost estimate for constructing a ‘Kudmul Ranga Rao Bhavan’ on the premises. Reviewing the project blueprints, officials informed him that the construction would cost around Rs 1.3 crore.Later, responding to complaints from Bikarnakatte residents, the commissioner visited the area and interacted with locals regarding underground drainage (UGD) issues. Engineering officials reviewed terrain maps with the commissioner, to explain the 400m UGD connection work.Residents also raised concerns regarding frequent interference by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) during civic works, as well as persistent waterlogging in the area. The commissioner assured that a joint meeting with NHAI and relevant department officials will be convened shortly to find a lasting solution.Officials from the MCC engineering and revenue departments accompanied the commissioner during the inspection.
