4 CRPF personnel hurt in accidental blast during explosive disposal in Bastar's Sukma dist

Raipur: Four CRPF personnel were injured, two of them seriously, in an accidental explosion during destruction of old and unserviceable explosives near a security camp in Sukma district of Bastar division on Thursday, making it one of the few blast-related incidents since March 31 in which security personnel have suffered injuries.Initial reports suggested that an IED had exploded during an area search near Elarmadgu camp in Bhejji. Police later clarified that it was not a Maoist-triggered IED attack, but an accident while a specialised CRPF team was destroying explosives. An ammunition technician team (ATT) of CRPF’s 50th battalion had arrived from Jagdalpur to inspect and safely dispose of unserviceable and leftover explosives stored at camps in Pidmel, Dabbakonta, Kolaiguda and Elarmadgu. The disposal operation was being carried out around 200 metres from Elarmadgu camp, near Bodrajpadar nullah, when a part of an explosive device was flung from the disposal site and exploded nearby, a police statement said.ASI M K Tiwari of the ATT and ASI Aneesh Khan of 50th battalion suffered serious injuries. Inspector Amarnath Mishra of the technician team and head constable Kuldeep Raj sustained relatively minor injuries. All four were given first aid and rushed to the govt hospital at Konta. Officials said preparations were being made to shift the two seriously injured personnel to a higher medical centre if required. In May, four security personnel of District Reserve Guard and Bastar Fighter force were killed in an accidental IED blast during a de-mining and area domination operation along the Kanker–Narayanpur border. The incident assumes significance in the post-March 31 security landscape of Bastar, where blast injuries to security personnel have become relatively uncommon following the “elimination of Maoists.”Authorities said the area was secure and there was no indication of Maoist involvement in Thursday’s explosion. An inquiry into how the accident occurred during the disposal procedure is expected.
