NEW DELHI: Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said that his ministry has approved Rs 1,176 crore for the construction of a 6.9-km-long, 6-lane major bridge with approaches across Teesta river at Sevoke on NH-10 in Darjeeling district.In a post on X, the minister said, “The proposed bridge will significantly strengthen connectivity between Sikkim, North-Eastern states and Siliguri Corridor, facilitating smoother movement of passengers and freight. The project will support regional integration, trade and commerce, tourism and logistics, while contributing to sustained socio-economic development across the region.”

He added that improved road infrastructure and enhanced connectivity will help reduce travel time, ease congestion and improve the efficiency of movement of goods and services, benefiting local communities, businesses and the wider regional economy.Earlier this week, Gadkari had announced a decision to build a 630-km corridor connecting Siliguri in West Bengal with Guwahati (Assam) and Shillong (Meghalaya), at a cost of Rs 61,500 crore. The road transport ministry has also taken up an expressway connectivity project from Gorakhpur (UP) to Siliguri.Once completed, the two corridors will provide high-speed connectivity between UP and the North East.
