Varanasi: UP urban development and energy minister AK Sharma asked officials to ensure proper planning to address problems such as waterlogging.While reviewing issues related to the city’s waterlogging, drainage, sanitation and electricity supply at a meeting with officials of the Municipal Corporation, Jal Nigam and energy department at the Circuit House here on Sunday, he directed officials to prioritise public grievances and ensure that citizens do not face avoidable inconvenience.Reviewing recent waterlogging incidents, Sharma instructed departments to work on a war footing and initiate immediate steps wherever drainage projects are required. He said long-term planning must be prepared to strengthen drainage systems and prevent flooding during heavy rains.Expressing concern over reports of deliberate obstruction of drainage channels, he ordered strict action against those found blocking water flow by dumping gravel bags or other material. Officials were told to remain alert, monitor drainage routes regularly and remove obstructions without delay.The minister also reviewed the power supply situation and directed energy department officials to ensure uninterrupted electricity. He asked them to resolve complaints promptly, repair damaged and hanging wires, and take all necessary safety measures. Public safety, he said, must remain the highest priority, and negligence in electricity-related work would not be tolerated.Sharma asked officers to conduct regular field visits in their respective areas, assess ground conditions and resolve issues on the spot. He emphasised sensitivity, coordination and speed in addressing waterlogging, sanitation, electricity and other civic problems.Earlier, late at night, the minister inspected waterlogging-affected areas and reviewed drainage arrangements. He directed officials to accelerate relief measures for residents. During the visit, he also honoured sanitation workers and appreciated their dedication, noting that their role is vital in maintaining cleanliness and improving civic services.
