Mohali: A special CBI court has convicted businessman Anil Kumar Gupta under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 418 (cheating with knowledge of wrongful loss) of the Indian Penal Code following his voluntary confession, ordering him to pay ₹49.5 lakh in compensation to the Indian Railways.Special CBI judge Baljinder Singh Sran sentenced Gupta to imprisonment till the rising of the court and ordered his immediate release after he deposited the complete compensation amount via a demand draft drawn in favour of Northern Railway, Ferozepur, on the day of the verdict.The conviction stems from a criminal case tied to three commercial agreements executed between Gupta’s firm and the Indian Railways. During the proceedings, Gupta submitted a voluntary plea of guilt, opting not to contest a full trial. The court formally recorded the conviction after verifying that his confession was made without coercion.The court clarified that the ₹49.5-lakh payout will be adjusted against any outstanding dues payable by Gupta or his firm, adding that the payment will not restrict either party from pursuing separate civil rights or legal remedies regarding the contracts.Gupta’s bail bonds will remain valid as mandated under Section 437-A of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
