Navi Mumbai: A 35-year-old Uber cab driver was detained by Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) police for allegedly outraging the modesty of a 23-year-old woman passenger after stopping the cab on the airport service road at Chinchpada in Ulwe node, while ferrying her from Chembur to her residence in Panvel past midnight on Sunday at around 1.35 am.API Priyanka Shinde of NMIA police station said that on Saturday night, the complainant woman had gone to Chembur for partying with friends. Thereafter, for returning home, her male friend booked an Uber cab from Chembur till her Panvel residence. As she was travelling alone, the accused cab driver planned to sexually assault her. Around 1.35 am, when the cab reached Ulwe, he drove along the airport service road and stopped on the roadside. He sat beside her on the rear seat, grabbed her hands and forcibly tried to undress her. As the woman confronted him and shouted for help, the accused did not further dare to sexually assault her and then dropped her at her destination in Panvel.API Shinde said, “Upon reaching home, she narrated her ordeal to her sister and also told about it to her male friend who had booked the cab for her at Chembur. She called her male friend to Kharghar where they informed Kharghar police about the incident. As the woman was unable to tell the exact location where the incident occurred, Kharghar police directed her to Panvel city police station. When she said that the incident occurred on the airport service road about 2 km from Ulwe, she was sent to NMIA police station, where her FIR was registered on Sunday around 8.45 am.”API Shinde added, “From the complainant’s male friend who had booked the Uber cab for her to reach her Panvel residence, we obtained the name and mobile number of the cab driver, who was identified as Mohammad Afzal Shaikh (35), a resident of Ulwe. When contacted, he was in Ulwe waiting for his cab booking. The accused Shaikh was summoned at the police station and after registering an FIR under BNS section 74 for the offence of assault or the use of criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, he was served with a notice under the provision of Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) directing him to co-operate in police investigation.”
