Pune: A 45-year-old private company official from Bhosari lost Rs 10 lakh to a fake RTO challan.According to the Bhosari MIDC police, who registered a case on Wednesday, the complainant received a message from an unknown number on Oct 2, purportedly from RTO. The message said there was a pending traffic challan in his name. “Your vehicle has unpaid dues. If the amount is not cleared, your case will be referred to court,” the message read.A police officer said the message contained a malicious link, which prompted him to download an RTO app through an APK file. “When the complainant installed it, the crooks gained access to his cellphone,” the officer said.He said the complainant then started receiving OTPs and, within three minutes, Rs 10 lakh was transferred from his bank account through three transactions.“We have sought details of these transactions from the complainant’s bank,” the officer said.
