Trichy: City corporation has sterilised 36,090 stray dogs under the animal birth control (ABC) drive to curtail the population of stray dogs in Trichy in the past two years.As a part of World Rabies Day observed on Sept 28, the local body on Monday launched a drive to administer booster anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) doses to maintain long-term immunity against the infection among already sterilised canines.As per the study published in Jan 2025, the city had 43,767 street dogs. With a decentralised approach, the local body, through four ABC centres at Kottapattu, Ambedkar Nagar, Konakkarai and Ariyamangalam, said it has sterilised 82% of stray dogs as of Sept.As a part of the booster drive, animal husbandry and health officials have tasked the dog catchers with identifying stray dogs that were neutered and vaccinated before 2025. Corporation commissioner N Ponmani, supervising the drive, said around 5,000 stray dogs were administered booster ARV doses in 2025. This year, at least 10,000 stray dogs will be covered. A corporation official said the booster doses will ensure efficiency of the ABC drive.
