Thiruvananthapuram: An 11-member team of doctors from Keralam will participate in the World Cancer Congress to be held in Hong Kong from Sept 24 to 26. The doctors will represent the country at the international conference organised by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), a global organisation working towards cancer control and prevention. The studies based on research papers presented at the Kerala Cancer Conclave organised last year have been selected for presentation at the Congress.The team led by Dr Boban Thomas, secretary of the Association of Medical and Paediatric Oncologists of Kerala (AMPOK) will present eight studies at the international conference. “This was the first time that such a large number of doctors from a cancer specialists’ organisation representing an Indian state would participate in the World Cancer Congress,” said Dr Thomas.Dr Thomas expressed hope that the research findings and discussions at the conference would help bring significant changes in the fields of preventive oncology and community oncology in Keralam.The doctors from Keralam are also expected to hold discussions with UICC officials during the congress. The association hopes the talks will help facilitate UICC support for cancer prevention initiatives in Kerala and secure its participation in the Kerala Cancer Conclave 2.0 scheduled to be held next year.The AMPOK leaders said the participation of the delegation from the state would provide an opportunity to share the state’s cancer-related research and initiatives on an international platform while also creating scope for collaborations in cancer prevention, research and community-based oncology.
