Patiala: Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has sought urgent action from authorities in Himachal Pradesh and Haryana over alleged large-scale dumping of industrial effluent, pharmaceutical waste and municipal solid waste into tributaries feeding Satluj upstream of Ropar headworks.PPCB’s Ropar regional office wrote to pollution control boards in both states and deputy commissioners of Solan and Panchkula, seeking punitive action against violators, curbs on illegal scrap and industrial operations and remediation of environmental damage.The action followed complaints about chemical and solid waste accumulating at Ropar headworks, impeding river flow and threatening water used by lakhs in Punjab. Ropar MLA Dinesh Chadha, who visited the site on Aug 23, described the contamination as recurring.City Ropar police station has already registered an FIR against unidentified industrial units in the Baddi-Nalagarh belt under BNS, Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and Environment (Protection) Act.A joint team of Chadha, PPCB engineers and police officials inspected affected areas in Himachal and Haryana on Aug 25.At Kenduwal solid waste facility in Solan, the team found municipal garbage and toxic leachate overflowing into Sirsa river. Pharmaceutical and allied chemical units in the Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh cluster were allegedly discharging untreated waste into the river.Along Balad Nadi near the Haryana-Himachal Pradesh border, scrap dealers were found dumping multilayered plastic, discarded medicines and pharmaceutical packaging into the riverbed. Large heaps of industrial waste were also allegedly being pushed into Marranwali Khad in Haryana.
