Amritsar: The police on Tuesday claimed to have traced the August 20 grenade attack on a house in Jatta village to foreign-based gangster Harpreet Singh alias Happy Passia.According to the police, Passia planned the attack with the help of family members and associates in retaliation for an incident during the recently concluded panchayat elections.Talking to the mediapersons, deputy inspector general, border range, Harmanbir Singh Gill, said that during the investigation, the police established Happy Passia’s involvement.Gill claimed that the attack stemmed from enmity arising from the panchayat elections. Three accused — Jagroop Singh, Vishavpreet Singh and Bhupinder Kaur, the mother of Happy Passia — have been arrested, while Manpreet Singh alias Sandy and Kirandeep Kaur, sister of Happy Passia, have been nominated in the case, but are yet to be arrested, he added.The DIG said the probe revealed that Passia had opposed the present panchayat during the elections. The alleged motive intensified on August 18 when Gurpinder Singh, Parminder Singh, Daljit Singh and Jobanjit Singh, all residents of Jatta, allegedly fired shots in the air outside Passia’s house during a fair in Passia village.Notably, two unidentified motorcycle-borne persons threw grenades at the residence of a person with a criminal background around 8.30 pm on August 20.Gill said the investigators suggest that following the firing, Bhupinder Kaur, Passia’s mother, and Kirandeep Kaur, his sister, sought revenge.Police claimed that Passia subsequently coordinated with his Singapore-based associate Manpreet Singh alias Sandy and other associates to plan and execute the grenade attack.Previously, a case had been registered against Bhupinder Kaur under the Explosives Act at Ajnala police station, said the DIG.
