Over 50 coordinated arson attacks rock Southern Thailand, 2 injured

At least two people were injured after more than 50 coordinated arson and incendiary attacks aimed at “creating unrest” struck Thailand’s insurgency-hit southern provinces, the country’s military said.According to a BBC report, the attacks targeted a local government office, a convenience store and a stolen vehicle, among other sites. They occurred across Thailand’s southern border provinces between 8pm local time and midnight on Saturday, according to a statement from the military’s Internal Security Operations Command.Narathiwat province bore the brunt of the violence, with additional incidents reported in the neighbouring provinces of Yala and Pattan. Two women were injured when a bomb went off in Narathiwat’s Muang district, the Bangkok Post reported.Several telecommunication towers were also torched, while security officials cautioned residents to avoid touching any suspicious objects. An overnight curfew was imposed in Narathiwat but was lifted by Sunday morning, with no further attacks reported since. No group has claimed responsibility so far.Thailand’s southernmost provinces have grappled with a low-level insurgency since 2004, as rebels from the Muslim-majority region continue to push for greater autonomy from the Buddhist-majority nation. The conflict has claimed more than 7,000 lives to date, with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) spearheading the insurgency.Malaysia-brokered peace talks, which began in 2013, have faced repeated setbacks due to changes in Bangkok’s government and internal rifts on both sides. The latest violence follows a July attack in which five soldiers were killed in a gun and bomb assault at a checkpoint in Narathiwat, an incident that led authorities to postpone a planned round of peace dialogue.Thai media reports indicate that insurgents frequently target security forces and government installations, often timing attacks ahead of official visits to the region.Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and members of his cabinet are set to visit Hat Yai in Songkhla province next week to discuss investment projects, flood prevention measures and regional security.
