Drug-addict son held for mother’s murder in East Champaran

Patna: Motihari police in East Champaran district on Thursday claimed to have solved the murder of Najma with the arrest of her 23-year-old son, who allegedly killed her for money to fund his drug addiction and then tried to pass off the crime as a robbery.Najma’s husband Suman Miyan, a resident of at Bankatwa village in Paharpur police station, had initially alleged that she was killed during a robbery after her body was recovered from a field on Aug 19. An FIR was registered on his statement at Harsiddhi police station the same day.Areraj SDPO Ravi Kumar said Harsiddhi SHO Sunil Kumar registered an FIR and launched an investigation. Acting on the directions of SP Swarn Prabhat, police formed a special investigation team led by the SDPO. During the probe, investigators recovered Najma’s body from a sugar cane field. Police questioned Najma’s son, Alam Hussain, whose changing statements raised suspicion. Investigators also found that he was allegedly addicted to drugs.According to police, Najma had gone to Areraj a day earlier to withdraw self-help group funds with her younger son, preventing Alam from carrying out his plan. The following day, after learning that his mother had gone alone, Alam allegedly bought a knife and waited for her. When she got off an e-rickshaw at Sevrah market, he offered to drop her home on his motorcycle.Police said Alam took her to a sugar cane field near Khori Pakad Chimney in the Harsiddhi police station area on the pretext of relieving himself and allegedly slit her throat. He then fled with the cash after throwing the knife into the field.“To mislead police, Alam cooked up a story of kidnapping, loot and murder. The breakthrough came when police found both Najma’s and Alam’s slippers at the same spot in the sugarcane field. Based on this clue, he was detained and confessed to the crime during interrogation,” the SDPO said.Police said they recovered the murder weapon, the cash and other evidence on Alam’s disclosure. During questioning, he allegedly told police that he wanted the money to fund his drug addiction and personal expenses. He has been arrested and sent to jail, the SDPO added.
