Fans of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ were in for a surprise over the weekend, as the Russo Brothers unveiled an all-new trailer that gave a glimpse into the back story of the MCU’s next biggest villain. Fans of the franchise have been raving about Robert Downey Jr’s next turn as Victor Von Doom and his epic line “Hell answers to me, for I am Doom.”While the trailer has won plenty of praise online, it has now faced a wave of criticism from a section of the audience, who have been comparing the film’s VFX to Nitesh Tiwari and Namit Malhotra’s ‘Ramayana’. Desi fans have taken to their handles to share their views about the film’s visual effects, which they claim, aren’t as polished as those of ‘Ramayana’.Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Yash as Ravana, the film ‘Ramayana’ is being mounted as a two-part epic, with Oscar-winning visual effects company DNEG handling the film’s extensive VFX work. Beyond the visual comparisons, many noted that the films’ budgets are also exceptionally large. As per reports, Ramayana’s budget is reported to have a combined budget of roughly USD 500 million for its two parts, while reports have placed Doomsday’s production expenditure in the range of USD 500 million to USD 700 million.
Fans compare ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ VFX
Following the release of the ‘Doomsday’ trailer, Indian fans began comparing specific visual effects shots from the Marvel film with footage from ‘Ramayana’ and even ‘Adipurush’.One viewer wrote, “10x the budget and this similar shot from Doomsday still looks shit next to Adipurush. Comparing #Ramayana to it makes absolutely no sense.”Another commented, “Honestly Ramayana looks way better than Doomsday.”A third user praised the scale of the Indian epic, writing, “Unpopular opinion: The world’s biggest films still can’t touch the India’s BIGGEST Ramayana’s trailer VFX. The Ramayana VFX/CGI looks far more polished, detailed & cinematic than Doomsday. “The debate continued with another post asking, “Why does Avengers: Doomsday have such poor VFX in the new trailer that even Ramayana looks better?”Another viewer questioned the reported expenditure on the Marvel project, writing, “Avengers Doomsday ‘s VFX WORK is So Damm BAD !!!! You Have $400 mn Budget …. Hope they will improve from here , it’s Very Difficult …. But Let’s Hope “
‘Adipurush’ enters the VFX debate
Interestingly, the discussion has also prompted renewed comparisons with ‘Adipurush’, Om Raut’s 2023 mythological epic starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon. The film faced significant criticism over its visual effects and character designs following the release of its trailer and subsequently during its theatrical run. However, some social media users now argue that Adipurush compares favourably with the footage shown in the latest Doomsday trailer. One post stated, “Om Raut literally showed New York City in Adipurush with USD 70M budget, which is better than the USD 700M budget Doomsday.”Another wrote, “Even adipurush look way better than doomday.”A third viewer said, “My respect for Adipurush has increased by 100x fold after watching DoomsDay trailer .”
Fans call out double standards
Netizens also debated over the ‘double standards’ applied to Indian and Hollywood productions. Some viewers have argued that Indian films, particularly mythological and fantasy projects, are subjected to harsher scrutiny, while Hollywood blockbusters are often given more leeway despite similar outputs and other computer-generated imagery.
‘Ramayana’ and ‘Doomsday’ release dates
‘Ramayana’, which is slated to release as a two-part saga, is being positioned as one of the most ambitious Indian productions to date. With DNEG overseeing its visual effects and the film is set to bring to life the epic battles from the ancient Indian texts to life.
