Jaipur: Even as Union home minister Amit Shah lashed out at UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and demanded she apologise for her alleged affront to ‘Vande Mataram’ while it was being sung at Congress headquarters in New Delhi on Aug 15, the local BJP unit was besieged by a somewhat similar controversy when a Hindi film version of Vande Mataram was played at a BJP event at Jaipur’s iconic Badi Chaupar, instead of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s original.When questioned over the error after the programme, Rajya Sabha MP and Rajasthan BJP president Madan Rathore and Jaipur city BJP president Amit Goyal, both of whom were in attendance, apologised to the audience for the faux pas and referred to the playing out of the wrong rendition — Vande Mataram from the 1952 film Anand Math — as a technical mistake.“It was a technical error. The Vande Mataram that should have been played was not played, and another version was used instead. The lyrics were the same, but we apologise for the technical mistake,” Rathore said.The admission of error, however, came only after it was picked by Congress, under attack by the ruling party, with Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully calling the incident a “serious lapse that should not have occurred”.“It was a major error. BJP has been accusing Congress of disrespecting Vande Mataram, but Congress has, in fact, never disrespected the National Song. We have been singing it for years, whereas they only started singing it recently. In fact, while it was played correctly at our event, at BJP’s Jaipur event, the wrong version was played and not even stopped,” Jully said.Acting against the firm responsible for the microphone and sound system at the event, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation cancelled the company’s payment for the Independence Day programme as “penalty”.Speaking to TOI, JMC’s additional commissioner Narendra Kumar Bansal said a notice was served to M/S DJ Beat, cancelling its payment for the Aug 15 event and warning that any future lapses would invite strict disciplinary action against the company.
