Sonipat: The Haryana Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the Aug 6 death of an 11-year-old boy crushed by a collapsing portion of a govt school’s entrance gate in Sonipat and launched a statewide probe into govt school infrastructureYash Kumar, a Class VI student, died during treatment after the brick-and-concrete structure at Government Primary School in Garhi Bilinda village fell while a watchman was clearing vegetation. The watchman was also injured.A three-member bench led by commission chairperson Justice Lalit Batra observed that safety audits serve little purpose without enforced, time-bound action. Citing constitutional guarantees to life and safety, the commission called the incident a systemic failure rather than an isolated accident.The commission directed state authorities to submit comprehensive reports by Oct 1 detailing the maintenance history of the Sonipat school, police inquiry findings, negligence charges and compensation for the family. State departments must also furnish a full structural assessment of school gates, roofs and boundary walls across Haryana, the commission ordered.
