BengaluruBritannia Industries may implement another 1.5-2% price increase next quarter, largely through “shrinkflation” in its Rs 5 and Rs 10 packs, as higher sugar, palm oil and fuel costs continue to weigh on the biscuits maker..Its CEO and managing director, Rakshit Hargave, said during an analyst call on Friday that the price increases implemented in the June quarter had offset only about half of the inflation the company faced. For its low-priced packs, Britannia has largely relied on shrinkflation, keeping the retail price unchanged while reducing the quantity in each pack.“If the overall impact was 1%, you would probably see another 1.5%-2% coming in,” Hargave said, referring to further pricing action. He added that such changes take time because they require adjustments to machinery and packaging.More than 60% of Britannia’s portfolio is sold at Rs 5 and Rs 10 price points, making outright price hikes difficult. The company instead tweaks grammage, or the quantity of product in a pack.Hargave said LPG costs, a key input for the company’s baking operations, had surged about 2.5 times in April and May before easing, but remain well above February levels. Palm oil prices have risen more than 20%, while sugar prices have increased further in recent weeks.Despite the cost pressures, demand remained resilient. Britannia’s volume growth, measured by tonnage, was close to 9% in the quarter. The company said June recorded mid-teen revenue growth as disruption caused by dual pricing eased and smaller retailers returned to the brand.Quick commerce is becoming an increasingly important channel, accounting for about 80-85% of Britannia’s ecommerce business and growing at healthy double-digit rates. The company is also developing products specifically for the channel.Britannia is expanding its health and wellness portfolio, including protein-based products, and said acquisitions remain an option where they can add strong brands, speed to market or capabilities that the company lacks internally.
