Thomas joined Miami Dade College as an engineering instructor, where he teaches students who are often close to his own age. His remarkable academic journey, which began with enrolling in college at the age of 10, has now made him one of the youngest educators ever to teach at the higher education level.

Nathan Thomas officially became the world’s youngest male professor when he accepted an engineering teaching position at Miami Dade College at the age of 18 years and 346 days. Guinness World Records confirmed that he surpassed the record previously held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the age of 19 in 1717. The achievement ended a record that had remained unbeaten for more than three centuries.Thomas began teaching COP 2270: C for Engineers at Miami Dade College in August 2023. The course introduces engineering students to the fundamentals of C programming and computational problem-solving. Many of his students are around the same age as him, but Thomas believes age matters far less than a willingness to learn. He has said that everyone enters the classroom with the same goal of gaining knowledge and improving their skills.

An extraordinary academic journey
Thomas displayed exceptional academic ability from an early age. At just 10 years old, he dual-enrolled at Miami Dade College while continuing his school education. By the age of 14, he had transferred to Florida International University, where he completed both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering with honours. His accelerated academic path eventually led him back to Miami Dade College, this time as a faculty member rather than a student.
A passion for engineering and teaching
Coming from a family of engineers, Thomas developed an interest in mathematics and science at a young age. He has credited his mother with helping him understand mathematical concepts in ways that made learning enjoyable. He says the most rewarding part of teaching is watching students grasp ideas that once seemed difficult, describing those moments as just as satisfying as solving engineering problems himself.
Looking beyond engineering
While continuing to teach, Thomas is also pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law, with an expected graduation in 2028. He hopes to combine his engineering background with legal expertise by specialising in intellectual property law, particularly in areas involving science, technology, engineering and mathematics. According to Thomas, the structured problem-solving skills he developed through engineering have proved valuable in his legal studies.
