Shashi’s ‘meeting with Kakoli’ at clinic sparks ‘NCPI join’ buzz

Kolkata: A social media buzz about former Bengal minister Shashi Panja meeting NCPI MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar at a fertility clinic in Bhowanipore on Saturday has led to speculation over the former’s political future. Kakoli’s husband Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar is a director of the clinic. While many think the former Bengal cabinet minister’s meeting with Kakoli might be a sign of her plans to cross over to NCPI, her followers have shot down such rumours, saying Shashi’s visit was merely professional and that she has been visiting Institute of Fertility Research since 1989. Sources said Kakoli, herself a doctor, was present at the clinic when Shashi visited the clinic on Saturday.“She never discusses politics at these clinics. In fact, she will visit the clinic on Monday as well. There was no political interaction of any kind with any NCPI neta on Saturday. Shashidi simply completed her work and left. She has repeatedly stated that having lost the polls, she is of no value to either the Ritabrata-led faction or NCPI. She wants to concentrate on her medical practice for now. She has also informed Didi (former CM Mamata Banerjee) about her work,” said a source close to Shashi, who, according to TMC sources, has maintained a low profile since the election results.Despite repeated efforts, the former Shyampukur MLA could not be reached for a reaction. The rumours all started from a social media post by the Ghosh Dastidars’ son Baidyanath on Sunday, in which he said: “Shashi Panja is going to leave Trinamool very soon.” Baidyanath, however, deleted the post later.Asked about this, TMC Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh said Shashi Panja had “not stayed in touch” since the elections. “I can’t really comment on this,” he said, adding, “Since the assembly elections, she has not been seen by party workers or by us. Before the polls, when BJP members attacked her house and those workers were later arrested… she was not seen even once at the court or police station.”Ghosh went on to say, “I had called her after the polls… She said she was abroad and would contact me once she returned. But we didn’t reconnect. Now, how am I supposed to know who she met, or whether it was in her role as a physician or a politician?”
