GUWAHATI: A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Assam’s Hailakandi district, officials said on Sunday.According to additional superintendent of police Samir Daptar Barua, “Five people have been detained so far, and one of them is reportedly a minor.”According to news agency ANI, the incident occurred at approximately 11.30pm last night at a house located near National Highway 6.The miscreant allegedly took advantage of the absence of other family members to commit the crime.Following the incident, locals staged a protest and blocked National Highway 6.The blockade on the highway, which serves as a vital link between Assam and Mizoram, resulted in a massive traffic jam, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for several hours.In a separate incident earlier this month, a 22-year-old man was apprehended by local residents and handed over to the police for allegedly raping and murdering an eight-year-old girl in Sribhumi district. The child had gone missing around 10am. Following a search, her family discovered her body in a forested area near a hillock close to their home. Residents identified the suspect, tracked him down and turned him over to the police. The victim’s family filed an FIR alleging rape and murder. Police, however, said the post-mortem examination was awaited to determine whether she had been raped. Locals also alleged that officers failed to reach the spot promptly to secure the crime scene, even though a police outpost was located about 300 metres away.
