NEET UG Counselling 2026: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has reviewed the preparedness for NEET UG Counselling 2026, with the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) set to introduce several technology-driven reforms aimed at making the medical admission process more transparent and student-friendly.The review covered the readiness of the MCC, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and other stakeholders for counselling under the All India Quota (AIQ) and other seats managed by the committee. Officials presented updates on the counselling schedule, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity measures, grievance redressal systems and candidate support facilities.
MCC introduces simplified admission process for candidates
The NEET UG Counselling 2026 process will feature a one-time physical reporting system to reduce repeated visits by candidates to medical colleges. After seat allotment, candidates will be able to choose between the Freeze and Float options online.Candidates selecting the Freeze option will have to physically report to their allotted institute within the given timeline for completion of admission formalities, including original document verification and fee payment.Those opting for the Float option, which allows participation in further rounds for seat upgradation, will be able to complete admission formalities through online mode. Such candidates will not need to physically report, submit original documents or pay admission fees until they receive a final seat after the permitted upgradation rounds.The upgradation facility will remain available until the third round of counselling. After the third round, candidates with allotted seats will need to report physically to their respective institutions for final verification and admission completion.
Online resignation, digital verification among key changes
Another major change introduced for NEET UG Counselling 2026 is the online resignation facility. Candidates permitted to resign from their allotted seats under applicable rules will be able to submit requests through the MCC Counselling Portal without visiting the institute, unless otherwise specified.The counselling process will also include pre-populated candidate data from the National Testing Agency (NTA), online document verification, seat matrix validation by the National Medical Commission (NMC), and verification by participating institutions.The admission process for NRI candidates will also be fully digitised. Applicants will upload required documents through the counselling portal, which will then be verified online by designated officials. The move replaces the earlier document submission process through email.
Expanded support for PwBD candidates and cybersecurity measures
The Health Ministry has expanded facilities for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) candidates by increasing the number of designated assessment centres from 16 to 61 across the country.Under revised guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission, the disability certificate for admission assessment will now be referred to as the “Eligibility Certificate”. The guidelines aim to create a uniform and evidence-based assessment framework for PwBD candidates.An Appellate Disability Assessment Board will also allow eligible candidates to appeal against assessments conducted by the initial disability assessment board.The ministry said cybersecurity preparedness for the counselling process has been reviewed in coordination with the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Training programmes have also been conducted for disability assessment boards, college nodal officers and document verification officers.
NEET UG 2026 counselling support measures
To assist candidates, MCC has established a 24×7 toll-free helpline and introduced bilingual information material, frequently asked questions and guidance videos. A dedicated grievance redressal mechanism has also been created for resolving candidate queries.The National Testing Agency declared the NEET (UG) 2026 results on July 16, 2026. Counselling for MBBS, BDS and BSc (Hons.) Nursing seats under the All India Quota is expected to begin shortly.Candidates have been advised to read the counselling scheme, information bulletin and applicable rules carefully before making choices related to seat acceptance, upgrades, resignation or disability assessment.
